Josef Berger papers, 1918-1982.

Collection comprises manuscripts, correspondence, diaries, printed material, scrapbooks and other material related to American author Josef Berger and his career as a writer, editor, speechwriter, poet, and lyricist, from 1918 to 1982, including his work as chief of press relations for the Allied Commission on Reparations, 1945. Literary manuscripts include books, articles, short stories, poetry and lyrics, speeches, and teleplays. Some manuscripts are of unfinished works. Also included are several manuscripts by Berger's wife, Dorothy Gay Thomas Berger, and daughter, Elwynne Berger. Family and business correspondence includes letters from 1918 to 1982. Diaries date from the late 1950s to the late 1960s and include the 1981 appointment book of Dorothy Berger Tormey. Printed materials include published articles, mostly from 1960 to1962, and letters to the editor, book reviews, and published books. In 1924 Josef Berger's essay "Laughter" won first prize in an Atlantic monthly contest; the essay is included in this collection. Scrapbooks include news clippings and book reviews for some of his books, and artwork by Dorothy Gay Thomas (Berger). Allied Commission on Reparations material includes a map and a passport.

American author Josef Berger (1903-1971) graduated from the University of Missouri School of Journalism in 1924, the same year he won the McAnally Prize for Literary Composition and took first place in an Atlantic monthly essay contest.
